Who is a Clinical Psychologist?
Clinical Psychologists are specialists in the assessment and treatment of psychological and mental health problems. They are specifically trained in a range of techniques and therapies and are experts in using these therapies to help individuals in reaching their goals.
Clinical Psychologists provide a range of services to individuals across the lifespan. Treatment usually involves the development of individually tailored interventions which can be provided in individual sessions, relationship counselling, or family-based therapy.
Clinical psychologist are not medical doctors therefore are not psychiatrists and do not have medical trainings or expertise to prescribe drugs but use psychological theories to help clients.
In order to practice as a clinical psychologist, each professional must be registered with the Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists (NACP). Additionally, in order to practice as a Clinical Psychologist, individuals are required to receive endorsement from NACP within this specialty. Individuals are able to access the register of psychologists by accessing the NACP website.
